[Salon] We denied an air defense system to our own military outpost

Right around the time the Tower 22 US Army outpost in Jordan asked for an upgraded air defense system and radar for combatting incoming drone attacks — and were denied both because ostensibly there weren't enough to go around — the DoD was emptying their stockpiles for Ukraine. Does this make sense?

On Jan 18, 2023, the worst happened: the outpost was attacked and three Army servicemembers were killed. There is plenty of blame to go around apparently, according to the Army's massive internal investigation, but hardening the installation during a period of high risk (160 incidents against US military in the region at the time) seems rudimentary.

"We've spent hundreds of billions on Ukrainian defenses and we skimped on our own. Shameful," says Danny Davis.
